Sean "The Butcher" Smithson begins his on-going TNC Movie Of The Week series, breaking down flicks that guarantee an undeniably 100% bad-ass good time! Sean goes back to the beginning for himself, and wears bell bottoms to the apocalypse...it's time to get funky with THE OMEGA MAN from 1971!

This is the first installment of our ongoing Movie-Of-The-Week series, where I’ll be walking myself down memory lane, and talking about the films I was brought up on. Hidden gems, off-genre fare, and even a serious curveball now and then, but no matter what, you can count on a good time with these full-proof flicks.

We start in style this week with that groovy tale dystopian horror from 1971, THE OMEGA MAN (based on the megaclassic Richard Matheson novel I AM LEGEND) starring Charleton Heston. Listen as I break down this wonderful film and it’s cast, and tell you why it belongs on the top shelf of your video rack.

Also, be sure to watch the videos below, where we have included the theatrical trailer, a choice scene, and the original making of featurette.

One of heavy metal's highest regarded musicians, IHSAN (Emperor, Peccatum, Ihsahn) sits in with Sean "The Butcher" Smithson, and talks recording, Nietzsche, making art with friends and family, and saxophones! Only on...THE NIGHT CREW!

Ihsahn, the musician, needs no introduction among the metal lovers here. His pedigree includes being the braintrust behind one of the most elite and respected bands of the black metal genre, EMPEROR, as well as a guiding force behind PECCATUM, and of course the solo project IHSAHN, whose fourth album EREMITA, will be released on June 19 by Candlelight Records.
Featuring guest appearances from cohorts like Devin Townsend and guitar shredder Jeff Loomis (NEVERMORE) , which ensure that heavy is as heavy does, and the return of valued saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (THE SHINING), who all add their spice atop the beautiful yet cacophonous symphonies of nihilism that are Mr. Ihsahn’s latest compositions. EREMITA has us simultaneously snapping our fingers, be-bopping, and headbanging here at The Night Crew offices.

Check it out, Mr. Ihsahn and I talk about the new album, the recording process, the joys of making art with friends and family, and we even bring Friedrich Nietzsche into it, who figured heavily into EREMITA conceptually. It’s 30 minutes of notion-dispelling goodness with one of the most intense musicians in the history of metal…on The Night Crew.

IN COVERSATION begins it's in-depth discussion series with writer/director Tom Holland. We kick things off with a discussion about the Master of Horror's new, up-coming horror anthology show for FEARnet, the highly anticipated TWISTED TALES! We also get into the advent of digital film making, it's pro's and con's, and the changes since the HD revolution.

With this, we launch our new ongoing, in-depth series IN CONVERSATION, where we will take a more detailed look at the work of a featured artist, as well as take the time over multiple installments to get to know them as people.
Let’s begin with one of the greatest subjects an interviewer like myself could hope to have, Mr, Tom Holland. Tom is a creative dynamo, having started out in television as an actor, landing guest roles on classic shows like 77 SUNSET STRIP, COMBAT, and even my childhood favorites MEDICAL CENTER, and THE INCREDIBLE HULK.
Tom then took a seat behind the keyboard, and knocked out scripts for movies like THE INITIATION OF SARAH, THE BEAST WITHIN, THE CLASS OF 1984, and CLOAK AND DAGGER. He wrote his own directorial debut as well, the genre megaclassic FRIGHT NIGHT, and sat in the directors chair immediately after to help bring to life that infamous yet huggable serial-killer possessed doll, that read-headed shit, Chucky, in the franchise-spawning CHILD’S PLAY.
Currently Tom is hard at work on an anthology horror series for FEARnet titled TWISTED TALES, and boy oh boy are we ever some excited geekazoids about it, here in the Night Crew pit. We also get into the advent of digital film making, it’s pro’s and con’s, and the changes since the HD revolution.
So stick around, because over the next few weeks we’re all going to get to know Tom really well. It’s going to be one for the books, guaranteed.

Also, please be sure to go to Tom Holland’s TWISTED TALES Facebook and click “LIKE” to get all the up-to-date set photos and other TWISTED TALES goodness straight from the Man himself.

Now, without further adieu, let’s get IN CONVERSATION!

DARK SHADOWS. David's new book SIX REELS UNDER. Watching movies in graveyards. Forrest J. Ackerman impressions. Plus much much more! It's the new format. More content, easier listening times.

Sean “The Butcher” Smithson and author/radio host David Del Valle talk about DARK SHADOWS, both the classic Dan Curtis program from yesteryear, as well as the soon-to-be released Tim Burton envisioning, which updates the Gothic soap into what seems to be a post-ironic envisioning. The jury is still out, but that doesn’t stop these two from crowing. David recalls his time spent visiting original DARK SHADOWS producer Sam Hall at his Hollywood hills mansion, and what kind of man Dan Curtis was behind the facade.

If you aren’t a DARK SHADOWS fan yet, prepare to be. If you are a DARK SHADOWS fan already, this is a do-not-miss listen. 35 minutes of Barnabas Collins lovin’ goodness for your ears. Enjoy!

And, if you have time to mess around, or your boss can’t see what you’re doing, check out the weird DARK SHADOWS related vids below. They all work, so ignore the lack of thumbnails if need be. Johnathan Frid on Merv Griffin is priceless. Until nest time, stay bloody!

Check out this extended, stand alone session with writer/director Gareth Evans. His first feature MERANTAU was an explosive debut, introducing burgeoning martial arts superstar Iko Uwais to action film fans around the world. Now, with the duo’s latest collaboration, THE RAID, the ante has been upped. Since this interview was conducted at the last Toronto International Film Festival, immediately following the film’s premiere to a beyond-enthusiastic crowd as the fest’s opening Midnight Madness offering, THE RAID has blown up, and exploded across screens around the globe, and making record receipts for a foreign language action film in the North American markets, a hard nut to crack for a subtitled film this day and age (sadly).
THE RAID may be a light at the end of the tunnel though, as far as what the future may hold. Are audiences opening up to the foreign market in a bigger way? let’s hope so, because good cinema is where you find it. And our own Andrew Mack found good cinema, and good conversation with his long-time penpal, the man of the hour, Mr. Gareth Evans. Luckily, he had his trusty voice recorder with him to document the hang out and discussion, and now, we bring it to you dear listeners. be forewarned, this was done with some excited film fest attendees and hotel denizens milling around. Trust us, the lo-fi is worth the hour of gold Mr. Mack has brought to the table.

This also heralds a new approach to our formatting. We will be shattering the show apart, and posting it as components. So there will be more to listen to, more often, without the long running times. All you need to do if you want the old style? Simply compile the components.

OK, enjoy the interview, and stay tuned for more goodness! For now enjoy, and check out the trailers for THE RAID, as well as Evans and Uwais’ first film MERANTAU below. As an added bonus, watch the trailer for their unrealized project BERENDAL as well, and listen to the interview for more on that aborted project, and if it will indeed see life on screens eventually.

Cheers!

Yes, it’s that most wonderful time of the year… Xmas… and The Night Crew have gathered some special presents to stuff down your intellectual chimney and clutter up the floor of your brain. In this Yuletide episode, long-time SESAME STREET and TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES puppeteer, Martin P. Robinson and LABRYNTH and DARK CRYSTAL conceptual designer, Brian Froud, stop by to sit by our hearths and chat about their careers over steaming cups of egg nog.

We also have the usual gathering of our “educated beyond their intellect” crew… Sean, Thom, and Andrew talk Xmas films in our “What We’ve Been Watching” segment, author Lorelei Shannon unwraps “Books That Burn,” seasoned Fangoria contributor Phillip Nutman gets all “stop-motion” on us and discusses the holiday specials of Rankin & Bass, Dread Central’s Gareth Jones looks at how to dispose of those nasty GREMLINS, composer Mars Homeworld looks at the latter-era of shock-rockers The Misfits, Hollywood historian, Dave Del Valle, premieres his new book, SIX REELS UNDER, and Sean looks at Truffaut’s THE BRIDE WORE BLACK, while Thom examines Yojiro Takita’s WHEN THE LAST SWORD IS DRAWN.
