This episode we bring you a one-two punch of bad asses of today, cinematic giants of tomorrow. First we have the team of Marc Senter and Nathan Grubbs, who star in the up-coming fight film BRAWLER, a modern homage to its gritty predecessors and one of the year’s best. Then, we have Mike Cahill, the writer/director behind the indy hit ANOTHER EARTH (now on blu-ray and dvd), an existential drama about loss and karma, set within a subtle science fiction framework, also one of the year’s best. It’s pretty high falootin’ around here right now!
Plus, the columns we all know and love return. In What We’ve Been Watching, Sean says Cate Blanchette’s GIFT is still working, Thom is left cold by CHILLERAMA, and Andrew wonders just where REMAINS came from. Lorelei Shannon touts one of the criminally underrated greats from her shelf of fine horror literature, this time it’s WET BONES author John Shirley on the binding. Thom essays on the classic Masaki Kobayashi film HARA KIRI, and Sean breaks down Jacques Becker’s French proto-noir TOUCHEZ PAS AU GRISBI. Phil Nutman pays respects to our dear departed Uncle Ken aka legendary director Ken Russell, with a bit of talk on his adaption of The Who’s TOMMY. Hollywood historian, the encyclopedic guru David del Valle talks autograph collecting, composer Mars Homeworld brings us another round of soundtrack breakdown, this time he takes us on a journey to a FORBIDDEN WORLD, and FANGORIA editor-in-chief Chris Alexander warms it up with some talk of SHAME, something he knows a thing or three about! Natch!
It’s another cinematic feast for the celluloid priest, where the movie house is church, the projector is God, and the silver screen is Heaven.
Welcome to that special Hell for people who talk during the film…
welcome to THE NIGHT CREW.
